Hunting General Information

Species Combinations

We are presently holding allocations for black bear, moose, white-tailed deer and mule deer.

For more detailed information on each species, please follow the direct links on the top of the page.

The black bear licenses are intended for spring hunting, although some can be used in the fall in combination with moose hunting.

Prime moose hunting is at the end of September and beginning of October, whereas the best deer hunting is in November.  Both species are available throughout this season, but we prefer to focus on one species with the additional license as a bonus.

Hunts are generally arranged in small groups of four hunters, offering flexible arrangements.  Hunts requested for a minimum of two hunters can be arranged on dates deviating from the program, but special scheduling will require early bookings. Two hunters share one guide.
One-on-one guiding is available at extra charge.

Hunt Locations

We hunt the boreal forest four hours (by truck) north of Edmonton. Click here to view the area. In Alberta, one cannot obtain exclusive hunting rights on any area. For this reason, our camp is located in an area accessible only with ATV’s. We thereby rarely encounter resident hunters.

Camp Facilities

Our main camp is located 100 km/60 miles east of the town of Slave Lake (55° 25' 21'' N and 113° 41' 31'' W) on the bank of a lake with an abundance of Northern Pike. (If you are interested in fishing, please inquire!) The camp consists of tent frames with solid walls and insulated floors. Each tent has good wood stoves.  Privacy for couples can be accommodated. Bring your own sleeping bag, or rent from us.

The guides are responsible for all chores in camp, although a helping hand is certainly appreciated. Emphasis is placed on clean, well organized camps and great food - both continually praised by our hunters. Canned food is rare, as we prefer a well-balanced and varied diet based on fresh and frozen food. If advised, we can easily accommodate any diet restrictions or satisfy any special taste.

Rifles

Any caliber of rifle from 7mm and up is quite adequate for our type of hunting. Magnums are excellent if you can handle the recoil. The most important factors to consider are the following:

  1. Use the rifle you feel most comfortable and familiar with, and
  2. Know the limitation of hunter/rifle combination.  If you are an inexperienced hunter or don't feel comfortable shooting at long distanced, please advise us.  Even the most novice hunter is welcome.  We will arrange the hunt accordingly.

Sight in your rifle, with the ammunition you will be using, at approx 5 cm/two inches high at 100 yards/meters.  If you have the opportunity, check the trajectories up to 300 yards/meter. We will test fire rifles prior to hunting, just in case and for peace of mind. If you have any questions as to rifle and ammunition, please call and we can discuss them in further detail.

What to Bring

Most hunters bring more than necessary. We have most of the small conveniences. I recommend that you bring the following:

  • Rifle and ammunition. Good, practical knife.
  • Binoculars. 7x35 or 7x42 are superior to pocket models. Compass and/or GPS if you have.
  • Clothing that can be worn in layers as the weather can vary. Slippers or light shoes (in camp)
  • Light backpack, fanny pack or turkey vest.

If you feel more organized with a suitcase or a pack box rather than a duffel bag, the choice is yours. Transportation is no problem.

Insurance

We recommend that you check your travel and accident insurance. We have $5,000,000 liability insurance and are bonded for all deposits.

Travel Arrangements

Edmonton has good air connections to the International Airport. Please advise us of your arrival time. Normally we will pick you up, or we will agree upon other arrangements. At your request, we will book hotel room.

Dates shown on the program are actual departure dates from Edmonton to the hunting area and arrival dates back to Edmonton and your travel arrangements should be planned accordingly. If you have some extra days you can spend in Canada, we will be happy to assist and advise you on possible activities. We recommend a two day trip to Jasper National Park, which offers breathtaking scenery.

We welcome non-hunting companions. If your companion chooses to stay in the city rather than accompany you during your hunt, several options could be arranged.
